17 Liberal Initiatives the GOP Would Like to Overturn

Americans can be extremely divided on various issues depending on their party affiliation. This is especially true when it comes to liberal causes that right-leaning individuals simply don’t agree with. Here are 17 liberal initiatives that many Republicans would like to change.

Critical Race Theory in Education

Most Americans agree on the fact that racism holds no place in our modern culture. However, many Republicans believe that the teaching of critical race theory in schools is an over-corrective step that takes things too far. According to Education Week, some argue that these teachings are overly divisive and focus on our differences rather than our similarities.

Gender and Sexual Identity Education

Several Republican bills have been enacted to ban or restrict teachings on the topics of gender and sexuality, especially if it’s without the parents’ consent. Topics under fire include abortion, gender identity, sexuality, and transgender individuals.

Parents’ Bills of Rights

Following on from our last point, many Republican parents believe that they should have the right to view and weigh in on educational materials involving morality, religion, sex, and similar topics. As a result, bills have been passed to increase parents’ oversight of their children’s curricula.

Gender-Affirming Care

A large proportion of Republicans are unhappy with the current state of healthcare for people with diverse gender identities. Because of this, some laws have been proposed and passed that limit the gender-affirming care options for transgender individuals.

Comprehensive Climate Change Education

According to NPR, three-quarters of Republicans prioritize the American economy over issues relating to climate change. It should come as no surprise, then, that many right-leaning individuals are not so enthusiastic about the rise in climate-related teachings in children’s education in the U.S.

Voting Rights Expansion

While most of the liberals among us are all for making voting more accessible to a wider range of people, many Republicans are rejecting this shift. Accusations of voter fraud have led a large number of Republicans to back stricter laws around voting, including ID checks and fewer polling stations.

Healthcare Reforms

Liberals see the Affordable Care Act as an essential part of the American system that ensures healthcare is accessible to all. However, some Republicans are proposing to repeal the ACA and prevent Medicaid expansion.

LGBTQ+ Rights and Protections

Society has undeniably become more accepting of gender identities in recent years, with a range of increased rights and protections for LGBTQ+ individuals. However, many Republicans cite religious freedom and the importance of safeguarding kids as key reasons why they’re against several of these rights.

Gun Control Measures

Guns can be hugely dangerous weapons in the wrong hands, which has led many liberals to call for tighter control legislation. But the majority of Republicans are not so eager to surrender their arms. Some people argue that more people should be armed so that they can fight back against potential attackers.

Reproductive Rights

As we all know by now, many Republicans have been fighting to overturn Roe v. Wade and limit access to abortions across America. While most Democrats see abortion as an important tool for female autonomy, religious Republicans commonly see it as taking away a child’s right to life.

Immigrant Rights and Protections

Overall, immigrants within the U.S. have seen a steady increase in rights over recent years. However, many Republicans are fighting to stop undocumented immigrants from crossing the border or gaining the right to live in America too easily.

Social Welfare Programs

Liberals champion social welfare programs such as housing assistance, food stamps, and unemployment benefits as essential resources for underprivileged individuals. But Republicans often see these same programs as an undeserved waste of money.

Net Neutrality Protections

Net neutrality protection refers to regulations that require internet service providers to give equal treatment to all data on the net, despite any potential biases. Many Republicans are making a case against these regulations, stating that a deregulated internet market is a better choice to evolve with the times.

Public Broadcasting Funding

Public broadcasting funding is another part of American life that many Republicans are not happy with. Critics argue that funding for public broadcasting services is often based on liberal biases and therefore should be changed or restricted.

Environmental Regulations and Climate Change Policies

Republicans are significantly more likely than Democrats to believe that climate change and environmental issues are not as pressing as current regulations imply. As such, many Republicans are campaigning to reverse some environmental regulations aimed at reducing the effects of climate change and pollution.

Cannabis Legalization

Cannabis remains illegal in most states. However, Republicans are voicing concerns about the legalization of cannabis in California, as well as in some other states, for medical purposes. According to NORML, Republicans are becoming more unwilling to respect voters’ decisions on the legal status of cannabis.

Affirmative Action Policies

Countless liberals see affirmative action policies as crucial in ensuring disadvantaged groups are given the resources they need to compete fairly with others. However, the typical Republican is against such policies, seeing them as unnecessary and unfair.
