The price of groceries is soaring. “Food prices overall rose 4.6% since September 2020,” but “meats, poultry, fish, and eggs had the highest increase with a combined 10.5% increase” (USA Today). What is a person to do? You still need to buy groceries, and, unfortunately, your income likely hasn’t increased to cover the rising price of groceries. However, one technique to save some money is to use credit cards that offer cash back for groceries.
The Best Credit Cards for Cash Back for Groceries
Four credit cards make the grade for the best credit cards for cash back for groceries. Two of these cards are associated with the big box stores Sam’s Club and Costco.
Sam’s Club Mastercard
The Sam’s Club Mastercard comes with several cashback categories that can help you fight inflation.
- For the first $6,000 you spend on gas in a year, you’ll get 5% cash back.
- You’ll get 3% cash back on dining and take out.
- Sam’s Club Plus members will get 3% cash back on all Sam’s Club purchases. (Other members get 1% cash back.)
In addition, the Sam’s Club Mastercard has no annual fee and your card doubles as your membership card.
Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi
Not to be outdone by Sam’s Club, Costco has the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi. This card also can help reduce the cost of gas and groceries.
- For the first $7,000 you spend on gas in a year, you’ll get 4% cash back.
- You’ll get 3% cash back on dining out and travel.
- You’ll get 2% cash back on all purchases from Costco and Costco.com
- Finally, earn 1% on all other purchases.
In addition, if you buy electronics at Costco using the Costco Visa, you can get an additional year warranty. Plus, this card has no annual fee or foreign transaction fee.

Capital One Walmart Rewards Card
With the Capital One Walmart Rewards Card, you earn rewards that you can redeem for cash, credit on your credit card balance, gift cards, and travel.
- For every purchase you make on Walmart.com for pick up or delivery, get 5% back.
- Get 2% back for purchases made in Walmart stores, at restaurants, and on travel.
- Get 1% back for all other purchases.
There is no annual fee with this card.
Discover
The Discover credit card is not associated with any particular grocery store. Rather, the cash back rewards change every three months. For instance, from January through March 2022, cardholders can receive 5% cash back for grocery purchases (excluding those made at Walmart and Target) and gym memberships. April through June 2022 cardholders can get 5% cash back at gas stations and Target.
To earn cash back each quarter, you must opt in. Otherwise, you will not earn cash back.
Final Thoughts
Inflation won’t last forever, but while it’s here, consider opening one of these four best credit cards for cash back for groceries. At least you can take a bit of the sting out of buying groceries and gas during this time.
