Former House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi criticized Donald Trump for saying he hopes the economy crashes within the year, comments that Democrats have widely condemned. The former president’s comments were at odds with the robust state of the U.S. economy, with low unemployment and reduced inflation.
Psaki and Pelosi react
Pelosi reacted to Trump’s comments on MSNBC’s “Inside with Jen Psaki” and called Trump’s comments “just another manifestation of the insensitivity and the grotesqueness of this person.” “He doesn’t care what that means to the kitchen table interest of America’s working families,” she added.
Pelosi swipes at Trump’s wealthy donors
“Maybe some of his rich friends who pour money into his campaign—because they don’t want to have to pay taxes—might take notice of his ineptitude,” Pelosi added.
Trump takes credit for economic performance
Trump made the remarks on Lindell TV’s “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” claiming, “We have an economy that’s so fragile, and the only reason it’s running now is it’s running off the fumes of what we did. It’s just running off the fumes.”
Trump hopes for crash
The former president added, “And when there’s a crash, I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover,” referencing the start of the Great Depression beginning just months after Hoover took office.
White House condemns Trump
Despite Trump’s prediction, economists largely believe the economic outlook looks promising in light of the apparent success in reducing record-high inflation. White House and Biden reelection campaign aides hit back at Trump’s comments, calling them “vile and just par for the course” for the former president, who was “revealing his true colors.”
Trump doesn’t care about the public
“Donald Trump should just say he doesn’t give a damn about people, because that’s exactly what he’s telling the American people when he says he hopes the economy crashes,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodríguez stated in her reaction to Trump’s comments.
Always America first
Biden administration deputy press secretary Andrew Bates said, “A commander in chief’s duty is to always put the American people first; never to hope that hard-working families suffer economic pain for their own political benefit.”
Pelosi and Trump’s bitter relationship
Pelosi, who has long sparred with Trump over myriad issues, took issue with him taking credit for the positive state of the current economy.
Calls out lies
“That was a stupid statement he made,” she told Psaki. “He also made an untrue statement. We’re not living off his fumes.”
“Joe Biden has done a remarkable job as president of the United States. Just around 14 million jobs, maybe more, by now with the latest report. Lowest unemployment. Cut it in half. The path of inflation going down,” Pelosi continued.
Trump wouldn’t understand
“[Biden] has been remarkable. And he has done it in a way that has justice—social, economic, environmental—in every way,” she added. “That’s not anything this person would understand.”
