The Best Dog for You According to Your Zodiac Sign

Choosing a breed of dog can be an overwhelming decision, with many factors to take into consideration to make sure you can provide your new pet with everything they need. But beyond the practicality of space and time, it’s also important to consider creating a harmonious home environment by selecting a breed that suits your personality.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Aries are known for their energy and enthusiasm, so an Australian Shepherd would make a perfect match. According to Dog Time, “Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent, energetic, and versatile dogs.” Another quality of Aries is taking charge, so a breed that is intelligent and trainable yet respects leadership, like a German Shepherd or Papillon, would be ideal.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Taurus values loyalty in friends, so a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever would make an excellent choice of companion. People in the Taurus zodiac are generally very nurturing, so a gentle and affectionate breed of dog such as a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is another great choice.

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

Geminis are social and communicative, making a sociable breed of dog, such as a Golden Retriever, a perfect match. According to the PDSA, “As long as your Retriever is properly socialized from a young age, they should be confident around new people and situations.” Other social dog breeds include Irish Setters and Corgis.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

The Cancer zodiac is emotional and caring, so a breed known for its empathy, like the Labrador Retriever, would be ideal. Cancers are also usually family-oriented, so a breed of dog that thrives on family life, such as a Beagle or a Boxer, would suit this.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

A dog that enjoys being the center of attention, such as a Pomeranian, would be a good match for Leo’s energy, as they are often very confident. Leos are also lively, so an energetic and playful breed such as the Australian Shepherd or Dachshund would be a great fit.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Virgos are meticulous and like to act with precision; therefore, an intelligent breed of dog, like a Poodle, will suit them. According to Petplan, “Poodles are one of the smartest dog breeds, which [makes] them very adaptable and easy to train.” Virgos usually prefer a calm environment, which fits a Shih Tzu or an Italian Greyhound perfectly, too.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

Charming and social, Libras are known for their friendliness, making a sociable breed like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel a great companion. Libras also have a need for balance in life, and a breed such as the Newfoundland or the Bedlington Terrier would help contribute to a harmonious living environment.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

A devoted breed of dog, such as the German Shepherd, would make a great match for the Scorpio’s intensity and loyalty. Scorpios are also known for being slightly mysterious and somewhat independent, traits that would align well with those of the Akita or the Afghan Hound, who are known for being slightly aloof.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Sagittarians are adventurous, making an energetic breed, such as the Border Collie, a perfect companion. According to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, “Border Collies are extremely energetic dogs and must have the opportunity to get lots of exercise. They love to run. They also need ample attention from their owners.” Huskies and Pyrenean Shepherds are also outdoor-loving dogs to consider.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Discipline is very important to the serious nature of a Capricorn, and therefore, a trainable and obedient dog like a German Shepherd would suit them well. They could also consider a Border Collie, as their work ethic would resonate with their own diligent nature, or the ever-loyal Golden Retriever.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Aquarius is a unique sign, and Aquarians are known for being innovative and stepping away from the norm. This makes an unconventional and intelligent breed like the Basenji a good match. Aquarians are also very independent, and the aloof nature of a Greyhound or Dalmatian would suit this.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

Pisces are very compassionate people and would therefore suit an empathetic breed of dog, such as the Golden Retriever. They could also consider a breed with a gentle and loving nature, like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Cocker Spaniel, as they would also match Pisces’s dreamy and imaginative personality.
