19 Things Society Glorifies But Shouldn’t

There are many accepted things in our society that we really ought to take a closer look at. A survey was recently conducted online, asking what sort of things we wish society would stop glorifying. Here are the top 19 responses.

Working Too Hard

Many people have realized the importance of not overextending themselves for work, especially in environments that often don’t reciprocate loyalty. The idea of glorifying endless work hours for a paycheck, at the expense of one’s personal life and well-being, is increasingly seen as outdated. It’s about finding a balance that allows for both productivity and personal happiness.

High-School

Contrary to the often romanticized notion of high school being the ‘best time of your life,’ many find it to be a challenging period. Surrounded by a mix of people and still developing coping mechanisms, it’s a time that can feel more like a trial than a cherished memory. The reality is, life often gets better as you grow and learn more about yourself.

Mental Illness

The complexity and gravity of mental illness are often misunderstood, with some romanticizing it as a mark of creativity or depth. The truth is, living with conditions like depression can feel like a constant battle for hope and stability. It’s a far cry from the quirky or glamorous image some try to assign to it.

Being Quick-tempered

The idea that being quick-tempered is a trait to be proud of is losing ground. Recognizing this as a sign of unresolved anger issues rather than a personality quirk is essential. It’s more about striving for calm and understanding rather than celebrating impulsivity and aggression.

Having OCD

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is often trivialized by those who equate it with a preference for cleanliness or order. In reality, OCD can be a debilitating condition that severely impacts daily functioning, far beyond the desire to keep things tidy.

Sex

The societal pressure around sex and relationships can lead to unnecessary stress, especially among younger people. The idea that one’s value or relationship success is tied to sexual activity by a certain age is not only outdated but harmful.

Not Taking No For An Answer

Persisting in the face of rejection, especially in romantic pursuits, is not only disrespectful but can verge on harassment. The notion that persistence will eventually win someone over dismisses the importance of consent and mutual interest.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are not lifestyle choices or diets but serious mental health conditions that can have devastating effects on health and well-being. They deserve understanding and compassion, not glamorization or misunderstanding.

Child Beauty Pageants

The controversy surrounding child beauty pageants highlights concerns over exploiting children for financial gain or entertainment. Many see these events as prioritizing superficial values over the well-being and innocence of the children involved.

Self-harm

The portrayal of self-harm in media and culture often fails to convey the deep pain and distress it represents. It’s a serious issue that deserves empathy and support, not glorification or trivialization.

Celebrities

The celebrity culture that elevates individuals with questionable talent or contribution to society is increasingly criticized. The focus on superficial fame often overlooks genuine talent and meaningful contributions to the arts and society.

Alcohol

The social pressure to drink alcohol overlooks the valid reasons many choose to abstain, including health concerns or personal preference. Recognizing that not everyone wishes to consume alcohol is an important step towards respecting individual choices.

Criminals

The fascination with criminals, often amplified by media coverage and entertainment, overlooks the harm and suffering caused by their actions. It raises questions about the ethics of glamorizing individuals who have committed serious offenses.

Teachers Sleeping With Their Male Students

The issue of sexual misconduct, especially when it involves educators and minors, is a serious concern that demands attention and action. Framing such situations as fortunate or desirable for the victims ignores the trauma and ethical breaches involved.

Being A Teenager

The teenage years are often more complex and challenging than the idealized version portrayed in some narratives. It’s a time of significant growth and discovery, but also one that can involve struggle and self-doubt.

Cheating

Infidelity is a betrayal that can have long-lasting effects on relationships and families. The notion that cheating is in any way justifiable overlooks the pain and trust issues it causes.

Soulmates

The concept of finding a ‘soulmate’ at a young age overlooks the complexities of relationships and personal growth. Embracing the idea that relationships can evolve and change is healthier than clinging to a notion of predestined love.

Anti-GMO

The debate over genetically modified organisms (GMOs) often features misinformation and fear. In reality, GMOs have played a significant role in enhancing food security and nutritional quality, countering the unfounded fears perpetuated by some campaigns.

Military Careers

While military service can be a path of honor and dedication, it’s also important to critically assess the motivations and consequences of military actions. Recognizing the sacrifices made by service members doesn’t mean ignoring the broader context of military engagements.
