“This aged well”: Republicans Accuse Biden of hypocrisy Following Yemen Bombing

However, many Republicans are now criticizing Biden for what they believe to be a similar decision. During the night of January 11th, 2024, Yemen was hit with several attacks, including air strikes, launched by Biden’s administration. While Biden did notify Congress of the attacks, he did not seek congressional approval.

Conservatives are accusing Joe Biden of contradicting himself after his administration’s recent bombing of Yemen. In 2020, Biden condemned an arguably similar decision by Trump, which killed an Iranian major general.

In 2020, after Trump initiated a drone strike that killed Iranian major general Qasem Soleimani in Iraq, Biden took to X, then Twitter, to respond. “Let’s be clear: Donald Trump does not have the authority to take us into war with Iran without Congressional approval,” he tweeted.

“A president should never take this nation to war without the informed consent of the American people,” he continued, highlighting Trump’s failure to gain approval from Congress before launching the attack.

Biden doubles down

A month later, the Democrat doubled down on his criticism of Trump in an X post that read, “As President, I will use military power responsibly and as a last resort. We will not go back to forever wars in the Middle East.”

“These strikes are in direct response to unprecedented Houthi attacks against international maritime vessels in the Red Sea, including the use of anti-ship ballistic missiles for the first time in history,” Biden said, explaining his decision in a White House statement.

“These attacks have endangered U.S. personnel, civilian mariners, and our partners, jeopardized trade, and threatened freedom of navigation. More than 50 nations have been affected in 27 attacks on international commercial shipping,” he continued.

Did Joe forget?

However, many conservatives made it clear that they were not convinced by Biden’s reasoning. Reposting Biden’s 2020 tweet condemning Trump’s attack on Iran, Marjorie Taylor Greene remarked, “Joe must have forgot..”

Conservative Benny Johnson made a similar point by highlighting Biden’s supposed hypocrisy. “It’s (D)ifferent when Biden does it,” he said, quote tweeting the same 2020 post from Biden. “This aged well,” added Representative Anna Paulina Luna.

Playing by different rules

Washington Free Beacon reporter Joe Gabriel Simonson also chimed in, writing in a post on X, “:) when you’re a democrat they let you do it.”

Democrats criticize Biden

However, Democrats were also among those criticizing Biden’s unauthorized decision. Democratic activist Nina Turner wrote on X, “Tonight, @JoeBiden dropped bombs on Yemen without Congressional approval.”

A violation of the Constitution

Michigan Democrat Rashida Tlaib shared a similar perspective on X, stating that Biden “is violating Article I of the Constitution by carrying out airstrikes in Yemen without congressional approval. The American people are tired of endless war.”

Incomparable acts

However, other commentators have argued that the actions of the two presidents cannot be compared, citing that Biden’s attack was targeted at terrorists within Yemen, while Trump’s strike assassinated a government leader.

Biden sends a message

According to Biden’s statement, “These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most critical commercial routes.”
