According to WordsRated, the average person says 16,000 words each day. But a self-centered person, when conversing with others, will speak more than anyone else. This is because self-centered people are more concerned about what they want to say and aren’t keen on listening to others.

They Lead Conversations

Inc.com says that the average person has 27 conversations every day. However, a self-centered person can’t take a passive role when it comes to conversing. They have to lead the conversation and will change the subject if it’s not to their liking. They don’t like discussing subjects they are not interested in.

They Are Loud

DecibelPro says that the normal decibel level of a human voice is between 55 and 65 dB. But self-centered people tend to speak louder than average. Why? Because they need to make themselves heard, and they like it best when others are concentrating on them.

They Talk About Themselves

Self-centered people love to talk about themselves. So, even when a conversation isn’t about them, they try to find something that will direct attention back to them. They often share information about themselves and their lives that no one was asking for to steer attention back to them.

They Don’t Ask Questions

LinkedIn says that when we ask open-ended, probing, and clarifying questions, we show that we’re interested in others. Self-centered people, however, don’t ask questions while conversing. They like talking about themselves and will gladly answer any questions directed to them, but they will not ask questions of others.

They Lie

According to Golden Steps ABA, some researchers estimate that the average person tells around 1–2 lies per day. Self-centered people, however, lie more frequently than others because they’re generally disinterested in the feelings of others and aren’t phased by how lies can be destructive.

They Go First

A self-centered person always likes to go first. If there’s a line for something, they like to be first served. They don’t like to wait on others. This is because self-centered people have very high opinions of themselves and don’t feel like they need to wait on anyone.

They Don’t Feel Empathy

Merriam-Webster says that empathy is the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of another. Self-centered people, however, do not feel empathy for others and show by their actions that they are not interested in the feelings of others.

They Are Not Considerate

Self-centered people do not tend to be considerate of others. So, they make sure they always get what they want, even if that means that others will go without. They always help themselves to the lion’s share and make sure they take advantage of all the perks.

They Gossip

It’s relatively easy to spot a self-centered person, as they like to gossip. They talk about others because they like the thrill of sharing information and don’t care how it will make others feel. They are not considerate of the feelings of others.

They Deceive

A self-centered person is more concerned about personal gain and what they can get than anything else. So, they often use dishonest business practices so that they can get what they want. They aren’t ashamed of trying to deceive others, even those they’re close to.

They Cheat

A person who is not faithful to their partner is often self-centered. This is because they’re not thinking about their actions and how they will affect their partner, their family, and their friends, but rather, they’re concentrating on personal pleasure. This kind of person is hard to trust.

They Are Attention Seekers

Self-centered people are happiest when everyone is looking at them and engaged in what they’re doing. Because of this, they do and say things that will draw attention to themselves. Some will even dress in a way that’s unusual so that people will look at them.

They Interrupt

People who are self-centered often interrupt while others are still talking. This is because they like it when they’re in control of a conversation and interrupt to get things back on track. They also interrupt while others are speaking to change the subject and talk about themselves

They Don’t Listen

You can easily tell if someone is a self-centered person if they don’t really listen when you talk. They simply respond to the things you say instead of engaging in the conversation. This is because the person is concentrating on finding a way to dominate the conversation again.

They Take the Credit

If a self-centered person can get away with it, they’ll try to take credit for someone else’s actions. They’ll do this at home, taking credit for the actions of their partner when others compliment them, and they’ll also do this at work by taking credit for the actions of their coworkers.

They Downplay Contributions

You can spot a self-centered person easily by looking at how they react to compliments. If they downplay the contributions of others when receiving praise, they’re likely self-centered. These kinds of people like to take all the praise for themselves and don’t like sharing their glory.

They Won’t Apologize

A self-centered person likes to be in the right and will stand their ground no matter the cost. They don’t like to apologize, as they think that this will make them look weak, and they’re very concerned about maintaining a positive image in front of others.

They’re Not Helpful

A self-centered person is more concerned about what they can get out of life than what they can contribute to it. So, when they see that someone needs help, they’re not the first to lend a hand. When the shoe is on the other foot, however, they expect others to come to their aid right away.
