There are many ways to look at the Bible. Some see it as a black-and-white rule book for life, others see it as a place for inspiration to be a good person, and some find it more like a piece of historically based fiction. Whatever way you look at it, there are some verses that need to be read today.
Matthew 6:34 for Worry
“So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” In a day and age where everyone is suffering from burnout, this is a quiet reminder that worrying today will not take away tomorrow’s troubles. Be still and in the moment, because tomorrow will come and whatever it brings with it.
Philippians 4:6–7 for Anxiety
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Everyone struggles with stress and anxiety, even if they seem like they have everything easy. Finding peace and gratitude in prayer can ease that anxiety.
Jeremiah 29:11 for Hope
“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” God has good intentions for our lives, even if we go through hard times. This is a reminder that there will be a light at the end of the tunnel if you have the faith to push through the darkness.
Romans 8:28 to see the Good
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” As Fred Rogers would say, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” Both of these encourage us to look for the good in all situations and to hold doing good as our purpose.
Proverbs 3:5–6 to stop overthinking
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” It’s easy to get lost in our own jaded perspectives on life, to look at things and think we know the right answers. While our heads overthink, this passage reminds us we don’t know it all and to calm our minds and listen to something greater than ourselves.
2 Corinthians 5:17 to let go of the past
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” You aren’t who you were yesterday. Maya Angelou eloquently says, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then, when you know better, do better.” In the context of the church, it teaches us of the renewal found in Christ.
Psalm 46:1 because we are not alone
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” It provides comfort that God is a safe place and a source of strength. In the literal sense, it tells us God is with us in the hardest times. For those less “guy in the sky” inclined, it can be a reminder that there is support around us everywhere if we ask for help.
Psalm 23:4 to face fear
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.” It encourages a fearless approach to life’s challenges, knowing God is with us. This offers us comfort in the face of fear and danger.
Isaiah 40:31 for patience
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” We need to learn that things do not happen on Amazon ordering time: we can’t make a request and see it fulfilled in two days. We have to trust in God’s timing, or trust that in time, what we work for and believe in will come.
Romans 8:38–39 because it’s unbreakable
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” This highlights the comprehensive and unbreakable bond between believers and God. We cannot stray so far that we cannot come back to the warmth of God and His love.
Psalm 37:23–24 for a joyful relationship with God
“The LORD makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” Offers reassurance that even in moments of weakness, God’s support prevents total failure. Encourages a joyful pursuit of a relationship with God because it is not all formal rituals and being serious.
2 Chronicles 15:7 for perseverance
“But you, take courage! Do not let your hands be weak, for your work shall be rewarded.” This one reminds us that hard work pays off. When we put our efforts toward good and what is aligned with our true calling, we will not only get to our goal in the end, but we will reap the benefits.
Hebrews 10:23 to stay committed to faith
“Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Even though times can get hard, stay strong in your faith, and things will be as they should be. It teaches us the importance of unwavering commitment to our faith.
Psalm 32:8 for guidance
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” This can be interpreted as saying that God will guide you when you quiet your mind and listen for His voice, or that you can find the answers you seek in His writing. Either way, it assures us of God’s attentive care and counsel.
Proverbs 3:27 for generosity
“Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.” We should always act out of kindness. Here, we are reminded to always help and be kind when we are able. This encourages generosity not only in money but also in actions.
Micah 6:8 to be just
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” This scripture defines what God considers good: justice, kindness, and humility. It reminds us of the simplicity of God’s requirements for a righteous life and encourages a life lived following these virtues.
Matthew 5:9 for peace
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.” We are quick to anger and judgment these days, choosing to ostracize those who do not agree with us. This scripture calls for peace and reconciliation. We should all put in effort to create harmony and resolve conflicts.
1 Corinthians 13:4–7 for love
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” We hear this one at weddings a lot. It is a simple reminder of what love is and what it is not. Taking this to heart, we should know how to act in love at all times.
Galatians 5:22–23 on virtue
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” This describes the characteristics produced by living by the Holy Spirit. Whether we are religious or not, these are virtues we should all strive to cultivate.
