What’s not to love about a new puppy? If you’re considering getting a new one and have a love for the black-and-white aesthetic, one of these 18 black-and-white dog breeds may be for you. It’s OK if you’re just looking for the serotonin boost, too.

The Boston Terrier is known for its tuxedo-like black and white coat and friendly demeanor. “They are a great option for a first-time dog owner or person who lives in the city,” Reader’s Digest says. These people-oriented pets were bred to be companions and will enjoy cuddling with their owner or a romp in the dog park.

Border Collies are highly intelligent and energetic, with distinctive black and white markings. They’re also known as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, making them easily trainable. However, they’re not suited for first-time dog owners who have never trained a dog before or for someone looking for a lap dog.

Dalmatian

Dalmatians are one of the most famous black and white dog breeds, with a movie all about them and a long-standing association with firehouses. Dalmatians are one of the fastest breeds and do best in active homes. If you’re looking for a loyal and loving family companion who’s always up for an adventure, this breed could be a solid selection; just be mindful around small children.

French Bulldog

Frenchies may not be exclusively black and white; they can have a piebald pattern that is quite adorable. “Frenchies remained the United States’ most commonly registered purebred dogs last year,” says NBC New York, probably due to their calm temperament. One of the Frenchie’s passions is napping!

Newfoundland

Landseer Newfoundlands are large and fluffy, with a sweet nature. These gentle giants were bred to do rescue work on fishing ships, so they love to be in the water. They have also earned the title “nanny dog” for being calm and watchful around kids, as long as you can handle the drool.

Siberian Husky

Friendly, fun, and strikingly beautiful, with black and white fur and blue or brown eyes, Siberian Huskies were bred to have stamina, speed, and determination. They have high energy levels and require ample exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom-related behaviors. If you’re active and like vacuuming, these are great fur buddies.

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin is a small toy breed with a black and white coat often described as cat-like and well suited for apartment living. Originally companions of the Japanese and Chinese aristocracies, the charming Japanese Chin still radiates regalness while having a playful side. This breed can be stubborn and have strong opinions, but they make lovely pets.

Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels are an excellent combination of sporty and cuddly. A natural hunting companion, they enjoy anything scent or retrieval-related. They are also incredibly affectionate pups at the end of the day.

Papillon

Papillons often have black and white coats and are small and elegant with distinctive butterfly-like ears. Though their delicate look may have you thinking “lap dog,” they are athletic and intelligent, constantly wanting to learn new tricks. Papillons adapt well to various living situations but thrive in homes with lots of mental stimulation and attention. They also have one of the most extended lifespans.

Portuguese Water Dog

Obama welcomed this breed to the White House as “First Pets.” These curly-coated, low-shedding, expert swimmers are affable, hard workers who must be kept busy to avoid mischief. You may not need to live by the water, but this breed is best suited for active families.

Great Dane

Harlequin Great Danes have white fur with large black and gray patches, and Mantle Great Danes have black bodies with white trim. The Apollo dogs are taller than most humans while standing on their hind legs. They are personable, friendly family pets, though their lifespan may be shorter than that of smaller dogs.

Old English Sheepdog

They are known for their bear-like appearance, with a shaggy coat that can be black and white. Laid-back and good-natured with strangers, their coats may be the only high-maintenance thing about them. Their tails were historically bobbed, giving them the nickname Bobtail

Chihuahua

While they come in many colors, black and white Chihuahuas are particularly striking. If the stereotype of yippie ankle biters keeps you away from the breed, with the proper training, exercise, and respect, this toy breed makes an incredible family pet. The key to a happy household is learning your dog’s body language and giving it choices and control.

Bernedoodle

A mix between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle could be the solution allergy sufferers are looking for in a pet. Their curly hair makes them more hypoallergenic than some other pups, and they’re especially fond of children, making them the perfect family dog.

Shih Tzu

These little dogs can have luxurious black and white coats and are known for their friendly personalities. They are slightly high-maintenance in their grooming needs, but they’re worth it because Shi Tzus are gentle, playful, and good companion dogs. Forbes warns, “It’s important to socialize your Shih Tzu from a young age to help curb anxious behaviors such as excessive barking.”

Australian Shepherd

“Aussies are remarkably intelligent, quite capable of hoodwinking an unsuspecting novice owner,” says the American Kennel Club. Aussies have a natural impulse to herd everything, including your kids. These dogs may not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a brainy adventure partner, they’ll make great companions for work and play.

This breed has an intelligent, playful, affectionate, and loving nature created by a blend of the Husky and Pomeranian. These pups have the look of a Husky in the much smaller body of a Pomeranian. “Both breeds also tend to be on the noisy side, with Huskies being talkative and Pomeranians being prone to yipping,” says Hill’s Science.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi is one of the oldest known breeds. While not as common in black and white as their Pembroke relatives, they can have a striking black and white coat. They have existed in Wales for over 3,000 years and were brought to the United States in 1932.
