Blockbuster Video Rentals
Friday meant a trip to Blockbuster, where the shelves were filled with a limited selection of movies. Choices were restricted to what was available in-store, making the selection process a mix of excitement and disappointment. Gen Zs can’t understand this, with all the access they have to streaming services.
Encyclopedias and Library Research
The internet completely changed the way we conduct research. A quick Google search gets you all the information you want without having to flip through bulky encyclopedia volumes for information. Boomers would spend hours at the library, searching for books and references. Navigating the library’s catalog system using index cards added an extra layer of complexity to the process.
Fax Machines
Faxing documents was commonplace in offices during the boomer generation. They relied on fax machines rather than email for communication. The distinct beeping and buzzing noises of fax transmissions echoed through workplaces. Then you had to wait anxiously for confirmation that the documents were successfully transmitted.
VHS Tapes and Rewinding
Movies are now watched over the internet, on streaming services, or stored on flash drives. Most Gen Zs have no experience with VHS tapes. For boomers, movie nights meant either erasing old recordings or purchasing new tapes. Moreover, VCRs needed time to rewind tapes and fine-tuning to optimize the playback quality.
Rotary Phones
According to Interesting Engineering, rotary phones are a thing of the past, replaced by modern technology. Most Gen Zs don’t even know what they are. Dialing on rotary phones involved patiently waiting for the dial to return after each number input. In addition, phone numbers had to be memorized.
Film Camera Development
For boomers, taking pictures was a different experience. They waited days for film to be developed; each roll of film had a limited number of shots, and you wouldn’t know how a photo turned out until it was developed. With digital cameras, photos come out instantly and there are editing features to bring out your photos exactly how you like.
Walkmen and Cassette Tapes
Creating personalized playlists on cassette tapes was a cherished aspect of music culture. Young people can’t relate to untangling tapes with a pencil when rewinding songs instead of simply pressing a button. There were no music streaming services or headphones; therefore, boomers used Walkmen for portable music.
TV Antennas and Adjustments
In the boomer generation, connecting to TV channels was a struggle. People had to fine-tune antennas to improve signal reception, often resulting in frustration. There were also limited channel options, which meant viewers had to make do with whatever stations were available. Now, there are various options available.
Landline Phones Without Call Waiting
Consumer Affairs reports that 97% of Americans have mobile phones. You can reach people any time with call waiting and voicemail services. This was not an option for boomers: they used landlines, which would send busy signals when someone was on the phone, and if someone else tried to call while the line was in use, you would get disconnected.
Typewriters and White-Out
Computer technology has greatly advanced. We now have word processors, which let you create documents, edit them, and have a clear copy before printing. It’s easy, quick, and clean. Boomers, however, used typewriters. They made a clacking noise, and you had to type carefully to avoid mistakes, as correcting them was tiresome.

Manually turning a knob to change channels was the norm in the boomer generation. There were no digital TVs or remote controls. Answering calls without knowing the caller’s identity was a common occurrence in the past. Phones had no caller ID. Unexpected conversations often happened because there was no way of knowing who was calling unless you expected someone to call. Using an answering machine to screen calls became a method of avoiding unwanted interruptions.
Printed Maps for Navigation
Navigation is different from what it was in the boomer days. It’s easier to find your destination because most cars and phones have navigation systems. In the boomer generation, they used printed maps. Developing map-reading skills was essential for interpreting symbols. Without GPS guidance, wrong turns were inevitable, resulting in people getting lost along the way.
Pagers and Beepers
Pagers were the ultimate communication tool before smartphones. Their distinctive beeps signaled urgency, causing users to find a phone and return the call. Gen Zs don’t know the suspense of waiting for a callback or the creative shorthand used to convey messages within the pager’s character limit.
