18 Core American Principles That Are Fading Fast

America has never shied away from change, but this is not always a good thing. In recent times, it’s not just the bad that has changed. Some of the best things about America are going away, too. In this article, we look at 18 of those things.

Family Values

Families today look different from how they used to. Research in the Los Angeles Times shows that fewer people are getting married, and the roles of parents are changing. These changes are reshaping what we think of as family values and how we live as families. Governments are even concerned that current generations might not have enough kids to sustain the economy.

Respect for Tradition

As society evolves, the respect for and relevance of traditions are frequently questioned. Today, most people want strong reasons to respect and honor certain things. It’s not like before, when people were told what to like and what to hate. People find more freedom in thinking for themselves.

Freedom of Speech

The ability to speak one’s mind openly is increasingly contested in various public and online platforms. To keep investors happy, social media platforms are deciding to censor certain views while promoting others. The fear of cancel culture has also left many afraid of speaking what’s on their minds.

Right to Privacy

Personal privacy is rapidly becoming a relic of the past as surveillance technologies become more pervasive. Even though they won’t admit it, both the government and large corporations are constantly listening to what you’re saying and watching what you’re doing. Not to mention, millions of people are posting about their lives willingly every day.

Free Enterprise

Big companies are getting more powerful, which makes it hard for small businesses to survive. This pressure is changing the way our market works, making it tough for new and small businesses to thrive. Amazon has been suspected of using shady tactics to crush its competition in the market.

Spiritual Freedom

One of the key elements of the American government was how well it separated church from state issues. However, in recent years, the two have found themselves more mixed up than the public would like. For example, Arizona’s abortion ban follows Christian beliefs, even though not everyone there is Christian.

Integrity

In the past, integrity was key to all American processes. This included government, family, business, and religion. However, in recent years, this principle has been eroded and many people in power have been exposed as cheaters and liars. Politico notes that a recent example is Donald Trump, who has been exposed as having forged financial documents to secure power.

Equality Before the Law

Despite the ideal of equal treatment, real-world practices reveal significant inequalities. For example, research shows that people of color are likely to receive longer sentences for the same crimes as their white counterparts. This shows that, despite how far we’ve come, we still have a long way to go to make sure that everyone is treated equally.

Democratic Participation

More and more people are choosing not to vote. Also, many people find it hard to vote because of things like long lines and confusing rules. This makes it tough for everyone to take part in democracy and have a say in who is in their government.

Rule of Law

The rule of law is being threatened. Some judges are influenced by politics instead of being neutral. Police sometimes don’t treat everyone the same, and the laws aren’t always applied fairly. As a result, people trust the legal system less because they feel it’s not fair.

Individualism

Nowadays, there’s a lot of pressure to be like everyone else and less encouragement to be yourself. Ideas that emphasize the group over the individual are becoming more popular. Even though this can help build community, it hinders originality and creativity in art and our lives.

Self-Governance

Local places are losing control over their own affairs. The national government is taking more charge, even in things that used to be handled locally. Also, many people don’t care as much about managing their own communities, which hurts the idea of effectively governing ourselves.

Patriotism

The way people feel about our country and its symbols, like the flag and anthem, is changing. Younger people and others question the traditional signs of patriotism, leading to debates and disagreements about what it means to love your country. Some are young and questioning their love for the country, as their lives are falling short of what they expected.

Community Engagement

The sense of community in America is slowly declining all over the country. As people spend more time on their phones, they spend less time engaging with members of the community and therefore feel no responsibility toward the places they live in. This explains why we’re seeing a decline in volunteerism and civic duties like joining the army.

Educational Freedom

There’s a lot of debate about what should be taught in schools. Parents and students face challenges in choosing schools because not everyone has the same access. Politics also plays a big role in shaping education, which can limit how much freedom there is to learn different things.

Accountability in Leadership

It’s getting harder to hold leaders accountable. There are many scandals, and often, not enough information is shared with the public. When leaders do wrong, they don’t always face the consequences they should. This has made people very skeptical about whether leaders truly serve their interests.

Innovation

There are many rules and money problems that are in the way of innovation. Schools and policies could do more to encourage creative thinking. Governments should do something about the laws that obstruct new ideas and make it hard for others to build upon these ideas.

Preservation of Nature

Caring for the environment is becoming less important to some policies and people. There are steps back in laws that protect nature, and not everyone is interested in conservation. Also, not believing in climate change affects how seriously people take the need to protect the environment.
