17 Laws That Only Exist in the USA

The United States is known for its diverse culture and history, but it also has some of the most peculiar laws you could imagine. In this article, we’ll explore 17 of these laws in different states, ranging from quirky to downright bizarre.

Ban on Smelly Pets

The state of Illinois has a law that prohibits keeping animals that cause inconvenience by noise or odor. This ban is enforced in Galesburg, Knox County, and applies to animals, poultry, and fowl. Better give those smelly pets a bath ASAP!

Horse Speed Limits

Did you know that in Indiana, there’s a speed limit for horses? Yep, this speed limit is set at 10 miles per hour (or 16 kph). The law emphasizes control over the horse at all times and applies to all streets within the state.

Prohibition on Bear Wrestling

According to AdvanceLocal, “In May 1996, the Alabama Senate voted 23-0 making it illegal to conduct bear wrestling for profit.” It’s illegal to exploit, promote, or partake in bear wrestling matches. The law aims to protect both bears and humans from harm and reflects Alabama’s commitment to animal welfare and public safety.

Prohibition of Tire Screeching

The state of Kansas has a law against tire screeching, punishable by imprisonment or a fine of up to $500. The rule aims to prevent disturbances caused by loud tire noises on streets or highways. So, if you’re planning on racing, you’d better head out of state!

No Reptiles in Religious Ceremonies

Another odd law that only exists in the United States, particularly in Kentucky, is that reptiles are not allowed to be used in religious activities. We’re not quite sure why anyone would want to do this, but note that you’ll be fined between $50 and $100 if caught!

No Surprise Pizza Deliveries

Thinking about sending someone a surprise pizza in Louisiana? Think again! Unsolicited pizza deliveries are seen by the state as a form of harassment and the sender may be punished by fine or imprisonment. In fact, this goes for sending someone anything they’re not expecting that they would need to pay for.

Airport Gambling Ban

At Maine’s Biddeford Municipal Airport, drunkenness and gambling are prohibited. The official law states, “No person shall be intoxicated, disorderly, engage in any form of gambling or commit any act constituting a nuisance on the airport.” This is designed to maintain order at the airport.

No Body Studios in Baltimore

This prohibition, specific to Baltimore, Maryland, says that no body studios are allowed. This is a very unusual and somewhat ambiguous law because there’s no clear definition of what a “body studio” is or what it’s used for. We’re just as confused as you are!

Restrictions on Selling Young Fowl in Massachusetts

The sale of baby chickens, ducklings, or other fowl under two months old is strictly regulated in this state. Oddly, sales are permissible only in quantities of 24 or more, primarily for commercial breeding. The law also prohibits the sale of these animals if they have been artificially dyed or colored.

Michigan’s No Seduction Law

One law that most definitely isn’t followed (and likely no longer enforced) is Michigan’s law against men seducing unmarried women. Enacted in 1931, it’s supposedly considered a felony to seduce or corrupt women, with substantial penalties including up to $2,500 in fines or five years in prison!

Mosquitoes as Public Nuisance in Minnesota

According to MinnesotaFunFacts, “areas where mosquitoes incubate or hatch are declared to be public nuisances,” not the mosquitoes themselves—though that’d be nice. This is a statewide law due to the numerous lakes and a response to health and welfare concerns.

Self-pumping gas is illegal in New Jersey, a law that was enacted to reduce fire accidents and for job preservation. This was also previously illegal in Oregon until the state lifted its 72-year ban in 2023 to allow half of all pumps to be self-serve.

Prohibition of Adult Mask Wearing in Public

In Florida, there’s a ban on those over 16 wearing masks that hide the face to conceal a person’s identity. There are, however, exemptions for holidays, theater, and emergencies. The law aims to prevent public disturbances and crime.

In the small town of Nucla, Colorado, a law requires every household head to own a gun, exempting only felons, the mentally disabled, and those opposed on religious grounds. Enacted in 2013, this law is a statement on local values and public safety.

Eating Fried Chicken With Hands Only

One particularly bizarre law enforced in Gainesville, Georgia, is that you should only eat fried chicken with your hands. It’s considered the “proper” way to eat the delicious fast food, both traditionally and according to the law. We can’t imagine anywhere else having this odd rule in place!

Illegal Honking Near Sandwich Shops After 9:00 PM

In Arkansas, a law prohibits the sounding of vehicle horns near establishments serving cold drinks or sandwiches after 9:00 PM, as per Code 1961, § 25-74 of the Little Rock, Ark. Code of Ordinance. This law, possibly aimed at reducing nighttime disturbances, reflects a unique approach to maintaining public peace and quiet.

Prohibition of Loud Whistling

There’s also a law against loud whistling or singing in Waterbury, Connecticut, with citations given for violations. Police enforcement of this law ensures public peace and reflects the community’s value for tranquility. This truly unique law seems to only apply here, so feel free to whistle away elsewhere!
